Fashion Forward

A look at the latest offerings from Indigenous designers shaping the future of fashion.

A Native to New Mexico, Jolonzo Guy-Goldtooth is of Diné (Navajo) descent from the Southwest region of the United States. Goldtooth is the creative fashion director of the design line JG-Indie, a Native American urban fashion collection. He grew up in an urban setting and his fashion reflects the American Indian urban lifestyle. A self-taught designer, Goldtooth pays tribute to the strong Navajo women and elders in his life who have guided him in a positive direction. These women and elders have influenced him to develop and achieve his dreams of personal creativity.

“My newest collection is called Bohemian Navajo, which reflects a carefree style that is flowy and bold in color,” says Goldtooth. “I recently had a photoshoot of two looks…with the bloggers of the Squash Blossom Duo: Shenoa Jones and DeShawna Begay. They are extraordinary models that have accompanied me to Melbourne, Australia, for the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival for the Global Indigenous Runway Project, and also to Paris, France, for the International Indigenous Fashion Week hosted in the iconic Eiffel Tower. I was supposed to show a couture collection at Milan Fashion Week in September 2020 but unfortunately due to the pandemic it was canceled.”

Goldtooth has strong aspirations to continue developing his collection into mainstream international fashion commerce and encourages other striving Indigenous artists to do the same.
